Amino Acids

Newborn Screening

LC-MS/MS is used on dried blood spot extracts to simultaneously quantify classes of metabolites including amino acids and acylcarnitines, as well as certain steroids and other small molecules

Plasma Amino Acids

LC/MS/MS quantitatively measures 35+ individual plasma amino acids with high specificity to confirm abnormal newborn-screen results, differentiate true disease from false positives, and guide diagnosis and management of suspected aminoacidopathies.

Sample Preparation

LLE

Liquid–liquid extraction isolates analytes by partitioning them between immiscible aqueous and organic phases, allowing proteins and salts to be left behind before LC-MS/MS analysis.

SPE

Solid-phase extraction retains analytes on a sorbent cartridge so matrix interferences can be washed away and the purified analytes eluted in a clean solvent.

SLE

Supported liquid extraction uses an inert solid support to disperse the aqueous sample and enhance organic solvent extraction efficiency with minimal emulsions

PP

Protein precipitation removes proteins with plates or by adding an organic solvent (e.g., acetonitrile or methanol), then analyzing the cleared supernatant.

Dilution

Dilute-and-shoot simply dilutes the sample with solvent or mobile phase to reduce matrix effects, enabling direct injection into the LC-MS/MS system

Derivatization

Derivatization chemically modifies analytes to improve chromatographic retention, volatility, or ionization efficiency before LC-MS/MS analysis.

Phospholipid-removal

Phospholipid-removal plates selectively bind phospholipids to reduce matrix effects and ion suppression while preserving target analytes.

Automation

Hamilton, Tecan, Andrew Alliance

Toxicology

All in One Methods. Derivatized and Underivatized.
